The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, one of the premier Institutions in the country was started on 16th November 1664.Madras Medical College was established in 1835. It has been a citadel of knowledge ,research,ethics and progress. Located in the heart of the city, the institution offers tertiary care to patients from all over the state and neighboring states. The first batch of students graduated in 1852 and were granted the Diploma of Graduate of the Madras
Medical College. In 1857, it gained affiliation to the University of Madras. After the affiliation in 1857 the College moved to be a center of excellence imparting training in all the specialities in the field of medicine and surgery and it is now one of the premier institutions in the country with under graduate, post graduate and super speciality courses.

Facilities & Services

Central Library

A new Central Library is of 1260 sq. mt. It has separate rooms for under graduate, post graduate and staff members. For under graduate there is 2 separate rooms, for post graduate and staff members there is 1-1 separate rooms respectively. The working hours of central Library for Madras Medical College is 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The total number of books in library is 102538.

Hostel Life

Hostel comprises of female lady hostel and male hostel  for under graduates, male hostel rooms for both under graduate and post graduates. Total rooms- 322 rooms, front blocks  –  152 rooms and rear blocks  –134 Rooms .

Sports

The Madras Medical College is equipped with all the necessary sports facilities.
The college contains a full sized cricket ground with regularly maintained pitch. For day to day practice, the college is equipped with two net practices. A Lot of inter-collegiate tournaments and matches have been conducted on this cricket ground. A Fully sized volley ball court with high intensity flood light is present. A Cement basketball court is also equipped with high intensity flood lights.
For hockey and football, practice courts are only present. Throw ball court and a separate shuttle cock court is also provided for the students. Indoor T.T., Chess, and carom are also available. The college also contains a four hundred metre running track for athletic activities. A separate area is provided for other field activities such as shot put, discus, Javelin and long Jump.

Campus

A new campus with a six-storeyed building for Madras Medical College was built on a land covering 325,000 square feet (30,200 m²) on the erstwhile central prison premises in 2010 and was completed in 2012. The campus will have nearly 1,250 students and 400 faculty and staff members. The campus was built at a cost of ₹ 566.3 million. Once the new campus starts functioning in late 2013, the existing MMC buildings will house the college of pharmacy, school of nursing and also accommodate students of the recently added courses of audiology, speech learning and pathology, radio therapy and radio diagnosis
