Established on 1 October 1917, Patna University is the oldest university in Bihar. It is also the 11th oldest university in the Indian Subcontinent. The university has over 30 departments ranging from science to humanities to arts. Known for its excellence in extra-curricular and traditional activities, Patna university has produced some of the prominent Indians such as Nitish Kumar (CM, Bihar), Sharda Sinha (folk singer), Jaiprakash Narayan (freedom fighter), HC Verma (experimental physicist), etc.
A majority of university buildings are located on the bank of River Ganga, with a campus in Saidpur.
