Rural education system: How these changes can revolutionize a child’s future

Indian education system has been subject to public scrutiny for years. And although major reforms have been implemented in the urban education system, its rural counterpart has been largely ignored. Considering the concentration of population in the rural areas along with the fact that most of the children are deprived of basic education, it is high time that the government takes charge for the improvement of the situation. That said, here are four suggestions that can create a significant impact:-

Number of schools

In order to improve the availability of education to the children living in the hinterlands of the country, the number of schools in rural areas need to be increased. School education is primarily responsible for the fundamental development of a child’s intellect and knowledge quotient. With more schools consisting of qualified teachers, kids can be exposed to quality education, which will directly improve the literacy and employment rate across the country.

Free Education

Financial constraint is arguably the biggest hurdle in making education accessible for the rural areas. Government can address this prolonged issue by establishing a dedicated fund or introducing a policy reform that allows them to pay for the textbooks, stationery, and school facilities. This could be instrumental in achieving the dual purpose of encouraging parents to educate their child and taking a step towards reducing poverty figures.

Infrastructure and facilities

Teachers, classroom conditions, and school facilities need to be at par with the urban education offerings, if not better. Government must focus on the mass recruitment of teachers and re-construction of pre-existing schools in the rural areas as a primary step to ensure quality education. Gradually, the government can establish essential facilities that foster co-curricular participation for the holistic development of students.

Balanced curriculum

It has been observed in rural areas that many students do not attend regular classes due to the ‘All study, No play’ approach of schools towards education. For this, the curriculum should be revamped to maintain a balance between physical activities, competitions, and classroom learning.

Special emphasis on computer literacy

With increasing technological dependence across nearly every industry, special emphasis must be laid on computer literacy. The idea is to make the children aware of internet so that they can develop an inherent understanding of the digital representation of the world and exponentially scale their exposure towards national and global happenings.
