SRM Institute of Science and Technology is a private deemed university with its campuses in Tamil Nadu, Kattankulathur, Chennai and Chengalpattu. SRM Engineering College was founded in 1985 in Kattankulathur. The institute includes seven campuses, 3 in Tamil Nadu — Ramapuram, Kattankulathur and Vadapalani, 1 in Delhi NCR, all 4 of which fall under ‘SRM IST, Chennai’. The remaining three campuses are located in Amaravati, Sikkim and Sonipat each. The institute has a student base of 50,000 approximately.
SRM was accredited as a deemed university during the 2003–2004 academic year and thereby renamed as SRM Institute of Science and Technology. Following the permission by the UGC for ‘Deemed to be Universities’ to be called ‘Universities’, the institute was entitled as the SRM University in 2006.
However the title had to be dropped after the stop request from UGC on using ‘University’ in the name and it was renamed as SRM Institute of Science and Technology in 2017.

Campus
Kattankulathur campus

The campus is built on a 250 acre site, about 35 kilometers away from the Chennai city. The Kattankulathur main campus includes College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Science and Humanities, School of Law and School of Management. The institute is also one of the few in India offering a degree in Telecom studies.
The SRM Hotel and SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Center are built on the Kattankulathur Campus. The SRM hospital can house 25 specializations in PG education in medical science along with 1200 in-patients.
The campus also houses the SRM Arts and Science College, SRM Management College, SRM Institute of Hotel Management, SRM Law Colleges, Valliammai Polytechnic and Valliammai Engineering College.
Ramapuram campus
Located at Ramapuram, Chennai, the Ramapuram Campus houses three colleges – the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRM Dental College, and Easwari Engineering College. Other than the namesake courses on offer in the three colleges, architecture, design, MBA, science and humanities are other subjects available to the SRM aspirant.
Vadapalani campus
The Vadapalani Campus is located at Vadapalani, Chennai and houses three faculties; the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of MCA. This campus is also notable for hosting The SRM Institute for Medical Sciences within its premises.
NCR campus
The Delhi-Meerut highway forms the perfect backdrop for the 25-acre (10 ha) NCR campus at Modinagar. One can find the faculties of Engineering & Technology, Management and Teacher Education located in this particular campus.
Amaravati Campus, Andhra Pradesh
The famous planned city of Amravati plays host to the SRM University, Andhra Pradesh (SRM AP). The private university has a campus spanning over 200 Acres. It was established in 2017 and is one of the newly founded SRM campuses in the country. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in engineering, liberal arts and basic sciences.
Academics
Admissions
Like most institutes in the country, SRM Institute of Science and Technology conducts its own admission test known as the SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE). Held every year in April, the exam can only be accessed via the online platform. An exception was SRMJEEE 2020, where the admissions were based off the Board exams due to the onset of the global pandemic.
The general paper pattern for the admission test consists of four compulsory sections – English, Aptitude, Physics and Chemistry. Either Mathematics or Biology is provided as an optional paper depending on the course chosen during registration.
As of 2019, 76,000 aspirants were called for counselling sessions out of the 170,000 students who had appeared for the examination.
An India Today list ranking the top engineering colleges in India was released in 2020, where SRM Institute of Science and Technology ranked 29 nation-wide. It also ranked 41st in India, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020, 19th in pharmacy, 35th among universities and 58th overall.
The Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements ranked it 2nd amongst private institutes in India.
