About
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Govt. of India conferred on the Institute, the Deemed to be University status with effect from 26th June 2002. Subsequently, the Central Govt. by Act of Parliament (National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007)) declared VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National Importance along with all other NITs. The Act was brought into force from 15th August 2007.
The prime objective of establishing Regional Engineering Colleges was to impart quality technical education throughout the country and foster national integration. The College started functioning in 1960 from camp office in the premises of Govt. Polytechnic, Sadar, Nagpur and subsequently an area of about 214 acres was acquired to house an independent Regional Engineering College at present location.

Facilities and Services
Hostel Life
V.N.I.T. has excellent residential facilities to cater the need of more than a thousand students. It is mandatory for hostel inmates to join the mess in his / her hostel, managed by committee of students’ representatives.There are seven Boys Hostels and Four Girls Hostels. Each hostel is having a telephone, T.V., Sports Items, water coolers, water heaters and well equipped mess facilities. All hostels are having independent mess where vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are available.
Academics
VNIT offers various UG, PG, and doctoral, and distance programmes. The courses available in VNIT are categorised based on whether they are offered at the UG or PG level and also on which department the courses are conducted by. Campus Life
The VNIT Nagpur campus is located in the western part of Nagpur city near Ambazari Lake, about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from Nagpur Railway Station and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur. There are three main entrances to the 225 acres (91 ha) campus: the Main Gate on South Ambazari Road, the Bajaj Nagar Gate and the Yashwant Nagar Gate.
Admissions
Till 2012-13, admission to the undergraduate courses (B.Tech) at NITs was through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), which according to the number of applicants was the largest single-day exam in the world. From the year 2013-14, admission to the undergraduate courses (B.Tech) is through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains. The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have one of the lowest acceptance rates for engineering institutes, of around 2 to 3 percent, second only to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India
Placements
The Training and Placement Department of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology aims to provide students with a platform for using their technical acumen to gain valuable experience by working in the mainstream industry. It also acts as an interface for Companies seeking talented young graduates and post-graduates in various disciplines.
